RiverWoods Senior Living Community Resident Bertha Button celebrated her 101st birthday on Friday, September 21, 2018. Bertha enjoyed birthday cake with RiverWoods Nursing Care Center staff and residents.
She was born in New Columbia and married her husband Al Button in 1943. They were married for 33 years, before Al passed away. They had two children, Richard, now deceased and Janet, who lives in Michigan.
Bertha worked in the office of Woolworths for 39 years and her husband was a state trooper. In her spare time, Bertha enjoyed square dancing, which her father taught her when she was a child.
Bertha now stays active at RiverWoods reading the newspaper and doing crafts. On a daily basis you can find her in the sunroom doing word searches, reading books and doing puzzles. She also enjoys playing cards with friends.
Bertha says she doesn’t know the secret for living such a long life. She said, “I worked hard and enjoyed my life and my family.” Last year her grandson drove 10 hours from Michigan to celebrate her 100th birthday with her.
Her favorite color is blue so her cake had blue flowers and she wore a blue sweater on her birthday. Bertha tells staff members she does not feel you should stop living and enjoying life just because you are 101. She says there is always something you can do to stay busy and active.
