Independent Living Resident to Celebrate 100th Birthday at RiverWoods

Independent Living Resident Olga “Jo” Vogt will soon celebrate her 100th Birthday at RiverWoods Senior Living Community .   This is a unique milestone at RiverWoods because several nursing and personal care residents have celebrated 100th birthdays over the years, but Jo Vogt will be the first independent living resident still living in her cottage to turn 100.

Jo was born on November 18, 1918 in Williamsport.   She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1936. Her first job was in a ten cent store making $1.50 a day.   She then worked at the Williamsport Pajama Factory for a couple of years before running a soda shop. She met her husband Daniel Vogt when she went bowling with her sisters and they were married on December 6, 1941, the day before the attacks on Pearl Harbor.

Daniel worked in a bakery and then sold stocks and bonds before retiring. He and Jo were married for 68 years. They have three daughters, 70-year-old Christie Gillern of Youngstown, Ohio, 69-year-old Barbara Linderman of Landsdown, PA and 62-year-old Michele Cho of Lewisburg. Jo has five grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Jo also has a sister who is 98. Her sister also lives independently at her home in Williamsport.

Jo and Daniel moved to a cottage home at RiverWoods in 2005 and Daniel passed away in August of 2009. Jo still spends plenty of time with her three daughters. When she’s not with them, she loves playing cards and has been a member of a local card club for decades, playing the game 500. She also enjoys having coffee with her friends at RiverWoods and playing board games such as Upwards, Scrabble and Mahjong.

Jo also continues to volunteer at the RiverWoods Auxiliary Gift Shop located near the Adams Center entrance. When asked about the secret to her longevity, Jo said, “I just keep going. I have no idea. It’s just one of those things. The dear Lord has been good to me and my three daughters have been wonderful to me. “She added, “I’m not a morning person. I like to sleep in.”

Jo enjoys her life at RiverWoods. She said, “I have great friends here. I love living next to Pam and Paul Mauger. They take good care of me.” Jo will have a birthday party with her friends and family at RiverWoods on Saturday November 17th and then a family brunch at Country Cupboard on her actual birthday.
